Key Takeaway

In complex manufacturing environments, tool logistics is a key factor in productivity. hyperMILL® serves as the master tool database, ensuring the consistent transfer of tool and technology data to Hummingbird. This enables the digital management of operational tool logistics right through to the machine, supporting end-to-end, collision-free processes, reducing downtime and improving overall efficiency.

Tool logistics as a critical success factor

In complex manufacturing environments, effective tool logistics plays a vital role in maintaining productivity. Downtime is frequently caused not by a shortage of machine capacity, but by missing or incorrectly prepared tools. Limited visibility of tool availability, manual processes and duplicate data entry create inefficiencies and increase the risk of errors. Hummingbird addresses these challenges by bringing structure, transparency and reliability to tool logistics, helping manufacturers reduce downtime and improve operational efficiency.

Hummingbird module: Tool logistics

Effective tool management starts with clear responsibilities and reliable data. When the Hummingbird Tool Logistics module is combined with the master tool database in the CAM system, tool and technology data are managed consistently from programming through to production. The result is less manual effort, faster production processes and greater potential for future automation and optimisation.

A clear division of roles between hyperMILL® and the MES

hyperMILL® serves as the master tool database within the OPEN MIND ecosystem, managing tool geometries, cutting data, technology parameters and complete tool assemblies. This information provides the technology foundation for reliable NC programming. Tool data is synchronised between hyperMILL®  and Hummingbird, creating a consistent and reliable data foundation. When a project is transferred from hyperMILL®, all relevant tool information is automatically passed to Hummingbird. Individual tools can be transferred as required, keeping tool data synchronised across both systems.

End-to-end tooling processes with Hummingbird

Hummingbird manages the entire tool logistics process within the operational manufacturing environment. This includes the creation and management of set-up orders, as well as integrating tool cabinets and pre-setting devices. All relevant information is distributed directly to tool setters and machine operators. Tools are uniquely identified, for example via a DataMatrix code or RFID tag on the tool holder. New measurement values or status information can be recorded directly and fed back into the process.

This creates a seamless workflow from tool planning in the CAM system through to use on the machine, with minimal manual intervention and no data discontinuities.

MES FAQ: Tool logistics

What is tool logistics and why is it often a productivity bottleneck?

Tool logistics covers the management, storage, and timely provision of tools. Limited transparency, search effort, incorrect measurement, or excessive inventory can delay setup and reduce utilization by 10 to 20 percent.

RFID or barcode/DataMatrix — what works for manufacturing shops?

RFID enables fast, reliable identification but involves higher costs of around three to five euros per tool. DataMatrix codes are more cost-effective but require line of sight, making DataMatrix suitable for tools and RFID an additional option for pallets used in automated processes.

Can I manage tool logistics across multiple production areas?

Yes, an MES can provide transparent tool inventory management across central stores, local stations, and multiple machines. Demand-based replenishment reduces walking distances and search time, particularly in larger production environments.

How does Hummingbird control tool logistics from CAM to machine?

When an NC project is transferred from hyperMILL®, the associated tool data is created in Hummingbird. Hummingbird compares required and available tools, generates setup jobs, and coordinates replenishment and tool measurement for an end-to-end, low-error process through to the machine.
